As most online marketers know, content and blog copywriting is a beast unlike no other. Not only do your words need to be compelling, engaging and to the point, just like any other copywriting assignment, but they also need to contain all the correct keywords and phrases needed to get your web page spidered and at the top of the search results.
It’s not about cramming in all the correct phrases. The density and order in which you use those phrases plays a huge part in how well that page performs in the search engines. Keywords need to be used in a logical and easy to read manner that doesn’t corrupt the reading of the article.
“We have the best selection of BMX bikes available on the internet, with a wide range of different coloured BMX bikes and different sized BMX bikes…” for example, won’t do you any favours. Phrases need to be used sparingly and with purpose.
Using keywords as anchor text is also another good way of giving emphasis to certain terms. Don’t however, make every phrase a link as this may well be penalised. It’s best to stick to making the article as useful as possible, and not too repetitive in terms of either links or content.
Blogs need to be updated with consistency. A regular time slot/day of the week for blogging will help establish a good relationship with Google and help your search results. Once or twice a week is a must.
Linking to previously published posts, such as related articles within blogs, helps to encourage continued browsing. This way, if you manage to attract a new audience/customer with your new blog article, you stand more chance of them also being interested in related articles and retaining their interest.
Also linking to posts on other blogs is a good way to gain some recognition. If other bloggers see that you are linking to them (and they normally do) they’re more likely to return the favour. On that note, check out ‘21 Tactics to Increase Blog Traffic‘ on SEOmoz.org.
Finally, make sure the title and URL contains the most important keyword phrases. If the URL features the search term users have entered, and that also matches the content of the web page/article, it makes a massive difference to your search results.
