Magento and eBay Inc. today announced that support will be officially dropped for the Magento Go and ProStores platforms, effective from February 1st 2015.

Launched in February 2011, Magento Go offered a cloud-based eCommerce solution that was designed to support small businesses without the need for extensive development and provided hosting by Magento. Emphasising the use of built-in modules and additional Magento extensions, Magento Go offered a rapid entry to market but with restricted options to customise.

Although the decision will allow Magento to focus on two core frameworks and deliver even more features and functionality in a faster timeframe, the announcement is likely to impact a significant number of retailers that employed the service, with just under seven months to investigate and proceed with a changeover to an alternative eCommerce solution.

Magento has announced a partnership with Bigcommerce, who offers a SaaS eCommerce solution similar to Magento Go in terms of features, functionality and pricing. It is however up to retailers currently based on Go to make a decision as to whether now is the time to make an upgrade to help empower growth in 2015 and beyond.

Here at The Pixel we fully understand the worries that companies using Go will face; the concerns over changes and the potential impact to their business. We have over seven years of experience with the Magento framework, and have delivered solutions for companies big and small from a diverse range of markets. We understand the need to handle such matters with utmost diligence and careful attention to detail to ensure a smooth transition that won’t impact upon the day-to-day running of the business.

We can assist in a move to either Magento Community or Magento Enterprise Edition along with offering a range of hosting and support packages that may be of use in your move away from Magento Go. If you feel that we can provide assistance or would simply like to discuss the matter and discover what options are available then please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
